About the Artist

Ed Gebski
"I use materials such as oil pastel, wax and chalk for the overpainted etchings."
Winner of the 1994 1st prize Prix de Rome Prize, he was selected to the ambitious exhibition 'Rode Poort' S.M.A.K. Ghent 1997 curated by Jan Hoet.
Gebski's compositions occupy a space between reality and fiction, where creation and destruction are inseparable linked.
"I discovered some old drawings from my childhood, or they reminded me of them, in fact they were old magazines that I found at a junk market."

About the Artist

Gebski's works synthesize art history, mass media, politics, sex, drugs and contemporary culture into ever-changing pictorial worlds.
With his unconventional way of working, he documents and reflects on his own life and that of his surroundings, among other things, drawings, etchings, paintings and photography combine media in an unexpected and poetic way.

Gebski came to prominence in the early 1990s with richly orchestrated play of overlapping shapes, patterns, and colors.
Paintings with a magical glow combining paint and chemical reactions between substances with imaginative names like Silver Nitrate, Red Blood Lye Salt and Schweinfurter Green. A combination of physical elevation and symbolic link to the elements.

Born in Heerlen, the Netherlands, he currently lives and works in Amsterdam. In 1993 Gebski received the Royal Prize for Modern Painting, awarded by the Queen, and in 1994 he was honoured with the prestigious first prize of the Prix de Rome.

The artist’s works are represented in prominent collections internationally, including SMAK - Museum of Contemporary Art, Ghent, Belgium; The Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; Museum Ludwig Forum for International Art, Aachen, Germany; AkzoNobel Art Foundation, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; and Cees and Inge de Bruin-Heijn collection, Wassenaar, The Netherlands: ABN AMRO Art Collection, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, as well as in many private collections.

In 2004, a group of Gebski's paintings was included in Tot Zover curated by Rudi Fuchs.
The artist was selected to the ambitious exhibition De Rode Poort S.M.A.K. 1997 curated by Jan Hoet - director of the IX Documenta, Kassel. In 2002, The Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, invited the artist for Ín Collectie curated by Rudi Fuchs, featured a series of Gebski's major paintings.
